Samsung SDS is trying to create a mecca for software developers in the Jamsil Campus (Global HQ in Korea). One of their effort is the ‘Meetup’ they are promoting, today it is what we want to talk about.

First of all what is a Meetup?
The Meetup @Samsung SDS is a group meeting of employees and outside developers who are interested in the IT field gather and communicate casually. Of course, this includes Meetup related to varieties of Career and Life.

Samsung SDS plans to expand the Meetup, both set in the campus and outside of the campus, up to 40 times this year. The Meetup is being held in three major locations. The Jamsil, Sangam, and Suwon area with themes like Hyperledger, AI, Analytics, Perfect ICT, and Smart Factory.

The Meetup started since last February and on February 22nd a Hyperledger Meetup was held with the theme of “blockchain.” 20 SDS employees and 80 outside developers attended the event, and Principal Engineer Ki-Woon Sung of the blockchain research team gave a lecture on the ‘Application of Shipping Logistics Using Hyperledger.’ Through his lecture Mr. Sung emphasized the importance of ensuring high speed processing and immediate scalability in recording data for enterprise blockchains.

On March 22nd a TDD (Test Driven Development) Refactoring Meetup was held with skilled developers at the center of Jamsil Campus. Refactoring means to ‘improve the internal structure of a software without changing the external functions.’ This Refactoring Meetup, which was held under the theme of Clean Code*, ran a series of practical Kata* based legacy code refactoring sessions with Samsung SDS instructors as operators. Participants includes app operators, social commerce companies, startup developers and SNS fans.
*Clean code: Code written to make it easy for team members to understand. In order to write a clean code, it is necessary for the members to remove the problematic source code (source code). It should be written so that even amateur developers can understand it.
*Kata: A small snippet of code created for training purposes. It teaches new techniques and approaches.

A developer of a web operating enterprise stated “Refactoring training costs a lot to take it outside the campus therefore the Samsung SDS’s Refactoring Meetup was such a great opportunity and had better quality and usefulness”. Additionally, most participants agreed that the Meetup was a great opportunity to rejuvenate by networking with other peers and find their identity as a developer.

On April 5th, developers who were interested in AWS (Amazon Web Service) as well as other cloud computing, gathered to discuss the idea of “accelerating open innovations through a developer community” and analyzed the effectiveness of the Hybrid Cloud implementation using VMware cloud on AWS.

In addition, at the Meetup, we will be discussing the standard trends of the IoT technology and how to utilize them this upcoming April. Also, we will be sharing how to write and understand open source correctly, and will be doing code Kata through hands-on practice.

Samsung SDS is planning to hold a large-scale tech conference twice a year, with varieties of Meetups on a monthly basis. Samsung SDS wants to build an open Software ecosystem where developers can casually intermingle so that SDS can acquire talented developers and technologies, also creating opportunities to collaborate with more companies.
